Traineeships
Plain-English info on how traineeships work at Grill’d, paid training time, rostered hours, supervision, and how to fix common issues.
What is a traineeship?
A traineeship combines paid, on-the-job work with formal training (typically a Certificate III in Hospitality). You should receive rostered time to train, competent supervision, and fair pay in line with the Enterprise Agreement (EA) and the law.
Minimum rostered hours depend on your state
In Victoria, part-time traineeships require at least 13 paid hours per week (averaged). Other states and territories set different minimums and rules. Check your state’s training authority or contact us if unsure.
Quick reference
| Right / Rule | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Minimum rostered hours | VIC: 13 hours/week (averaged) for part-time traineeships. NSW/QLD/SA/WA/ACT/TAS/NT: Requirements differ, please speak to GWU or UWU. |
| Training time is paid | On-the-job and approved off-the-job modules are paid work. Ensure training time appears on your timesheets/payslips. |
| Supervision & assessment | You’re entitled to competent supervision and reasonable opportunities to complete assessments and sign-offs. |
| Breaks & safety | Normal break entitlements and safety rules apply to trainees like all other workers under the EA and WHS laws. |
Rostered hours must support training
If your average drops below your state’s minimum (e.g., 13 hours in VIC), it undermines your training plan. Raise it early, keep roster records over 4-week windows.
Training time is paid work
Whether you complete modules at store or an approved off-site session, it should be paid. Keep screenshots/records and check it lands on your payslip.
Stay on-track for completion
You shouldn’t be kept as a ‘trainee’ once competencies are met. On completion, you should move to the correct non-trainee classification and rate.
Need help or not sure?
If you’re told to do training at home unpaid, your hours fall short, or you can’t access assessments, talk to a delegate or contact us for support.
Finishing or exiting a traineeship
On completion you should move to the appropriate non-trainee classification/rate. If the traineeship isn’t working or was mis-used, get advice.
Think your traineeship isn’t being run properly?
Keep records (rosters, timesheets, module completions, messages). If training isn’t paid, hours fall below your state minimum, or you’re blocked from assessments, reach out for help.
